Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral?

It depends. some insurers require a referral and some do not. PPO's are more likely to allow patients to self-schedule for with the visit covered by their insurance plan, while some HMO's require referral. Medicare typically requires a referral. Self-pay does not require a referral and patients can direct schedule themselves.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring a list of any medication you are currently on, as well as supplements (including vitamins and other supplements like protein supplements and herbals). You may also bring a companion with you to your virtual appointment if needed and with adequate HIPAA disclosure releases on file.

How long are visits?

Initial visits are 60 minutes and follow up appointments are 30 minutes. However, deviation from this always possible if more time is needed for appropriate assessment, intervention and nutrition planning.

I would like more structured, long term nutritional care. Do you offer packages or programs?

Yes! In addition to individual appointments, I offer nutrition care packages for clients who prefer a more structured follow-up schedule or anticipate needing ongoing nutrition support. Packages include multiple sessions over a set period of time, ranging from 6–24 weeks, and allow us to monitor progress, adjust recommendations as needed, and support long-term, sustainable changes.

Clients enrolled in a package program also receive a welcome packet, starter nutrition guide, and structured tracking tools to help streamline the nutrition care process and identify focus areas more efficiently.

Some examples of who packages may be beneficial for include those seeking weight management, diabetes care, general nutrition support, certain GI issues like IBS or food intolerances, and certain chronic health conditions. Programs may also be tailored to specific nutrition concerns when appropriate.

All clients receive individualized, evidence-based nutrition care regardless of scheduling format selected.

Package programs simply provide an option for clients who prefer to schedule ongoing care in advance.

Package pricing varies based on program length and typically offers a lower cost per visit compared to scheduling sessions individually. Appointments are scheduled in advance for added convenience and continuity of care. Please contact 254-221-9059 or send a message through the patient portal for additional information.

Who may benefit from a nutrition care package?

Nutrition care packages can be especially helpful for individuals looking for more consistent support and accountability between visits. This may include those managing chronic health conditions, working toward weight or lifestyle goals, navigating digestive concerns, building a healthier relationship with food, or making long-term nutrition changes. Packages are often a good fit for clients who feel they would benefit from regular follow-up and a more structured approach.

Are all appointments virtual?

Yes! All appointments are virtual and patients will receive a secure invitation to join their visit virtually. It is important to be somewhere private, safe and with good internet connection.

Are medical nutrition therapy (MNT) visits with a Dietitian covered by insurance?

Almost all insurers cover MNT (Medical Nutrition Therapy). NOTE- At this time, Blue Cross Blue Sheild plans and Medicare are accepted. However, if you have a different insurer, a superbill can be provided to submit to them for reimbursement.

Do you practice weight inclusivity and take a non-diet approach?

Absolutely. Medical Nutrition Therapy, nutrition education and nutrition counseling all come from a non-diet perspective and are centered around a weight neutral perspective unless weight loss is specifically desired and appropriate. Regardless, health at every size is a foundational pillar at Spainhour Nutrition Therapy. Intervention surrounding weight or weight loss (whether for desire of weight loss OR for a medical condition that would benefit from weight loss due to physiological effects) can be a complex and sensitive topic, so every appointment will be tailored to the patient and their specific situations, circumstances, needs, medical history, etc.
